Orient Edge Walsall In Cup

Leyton Orient progressed in to the third round of the FA Cup, after narrowly beating Walsall at the weekend in the second round.

They will now face Championship side Yeovil Town as their reward.

The Saddlers created the first real opening of the match in the early stages as Craig Westcarr broke the Orient defence and forced keeper Jamie Jones in to a diving save to deny the former Chesterfield forward.

From the resulting corner Walsall captain Andy Butler volleyed just over the goal as the visitors looked for an early lead.

The hosts were struggling to put their stamp on proceedings with David Mooney`s high and wide effort the only chance of note at the start of the match.

Walsall kept pushing and nearly took the lead twice with Ashley Hemmings and Westcarr narrowly missing the target.

And they were to pay for a series of missed chances as Orient took a surprise lead. David Mooney`s low cross from the edge of the box was missed by an onrushing Shaun Batt but fell in to the path of Dean Cox. Cox with great temperament then controlled and accurately finished the ball past several defenders and keeper Richard O`Donnell.

Despite entering the break a goal behind, the visitors kept up their attacking performance in the second period. Hemmings went close once again beating an Orient defender to get a shot away but it was well held by Jones.

Perhaps Walsall`s luck had run out when Craig Westcarr`s terrific free kick rebounded off the near post on to Jones in the Orient goal, who then saw the ball cannon off him to safety.

At the other end Batt could have made it two, but he dragged his effort wide after beating the offside trap.

The O`s had appeared to see out the game, but stand in skipper Mooney then got himself needlessly sent off in injury time after kicking out at Paul Downing.

It allowed the Saddlers to build some momentum at the death and they almost grabbed an equaliser. From their corner, the ball fell to Sam Mantom on the right, his cross eventually found Westcarr free on the edge of the six yard box, but he slipped at the wrong moment and lost control of the ball. The ball then fell for Downing who from the same distance blasted his shot high and wide.

And that proved to be the last action of the game as Orient dug out a win to make the third round.
