BattMan Fires O's Into Second Round

Gillingham
1 - 3
Leyton Orient

Priestfield Stadium

3rd September 2013

Attendance: 1,630

Referee:

Shaun Batt fired his team into the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after a scintillating hat-trick display.

His three goals inside the hour mark were enough to ensure the O's won their seventh game out of eight this season.

The first moment of real note in the match came after 10 minutes when Cody McDonald nearly latched onto a weak header back by Nathan Clarke; but keeper Jamie Jones was alert to deal with the danger.

With neither side taking a stranglehold of the game, the O's were given a major opportunity to take control in the 25th minute.

Romain Vincelot was chopped down in the area by McDonald with Batt stepping up to confidently put away the penalty.

Skipper Clarke then made up for his loose error down the other end as he kept the O's in the lead, superbly blocking twice from Gills strikers McDonald and Antonio German.

Gillingham upped the pressure but it was the O's who were to add to their tally.

Moses Odubajo broke down the flank and was able to deliver another supreme ball which landed perfectly for Batt to nod in for his second of the game.

The O's went into the second period two goals up and within ten minutes of the restart had made it three.

Jayden Stockley, just signed from Bournemouth linked up well with Batt before the former Millwall man coolly slotted past Stuart Nelson to claim his hat-trick.

Gillingham still kept pressing despite the game seemingly beyond them and they grabbed what proved to be a merited consolation 20 minutes from time when Bradley Dack headed home from close range.

The visitors saw out the final quarter of the match to seal another impressive victory as they progress in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
