O`s Complete Season With Oldham Draw

Leyton Orient
1 - 1
Oldham Athletic

Brisbane Road

27th April 2013

Attendance: 5,191

Leyton Orient secured seventh spot in the final League 1 standings after an entertaining 1-1 draw against survivors Oldham Athletic.

The match completed a memorable season for the O`s as they came close to glory in both the league and cup, whilst for Oldham they will want to wipe away the memory of the 2012/13 term.

It was the visitors who got to the brighter start, relaxed after securing safety last weekend, playing with the pressure off them as they created some early openings. Kirk Millar had a good early chance as he was played through but O`s keeper Jamie Jones was quick to react to sweep the ball away from the attacker`s feet.

Again Oldham went close as Athletic skipper Jose Baxter`s appeals for a penalty were turned down after a scramble in the Orient box.

The home side managed to survive the mini onslaught in the opening minutes and made the visitors pay for a failure to take their opportunities on nine minutes, when Jimmy Smith scored.

Lloyd James found Moses Odubajo on the right who drove forward to find Charlie MacDonald. MacDonald cleverly left the ball for an on charging Jimmy Smith who latched onto the ball and fired an unstoppable shot over Dean Bouzanis.

On 16 minutes, the O`s were awarded a free kick inside the penalty area after referee Fred Graham adjudged the Oldham keeper to have picked up a back pass when it seemed like it was an attempted tackle by the Athletic defender. The O`s couldn`t get pass eight Latics defenders on the line as the ball eventually was cleared.

With half an hour gone Orient created another half chance. A deep cross from full back Gary Sawyer just evaded the foot of a rushing Moses Odubajo at the far post. The half eventually faded out as the O`s took the lead into the break.

But the lead wasn`t to last for too much longer after the interval as Oldham found a quick response. Leon McSweeney was caught dallying on the ball by Cristian Montano, who collected the ball and his deflected cross found its way perfectly into the path of Millar, who tapped the ball in past a helpless Jones.

That sparked Oldham into life as they turned the screw on the hosts as they looked for a winning end to their campaign.

But despite not controlling the game, Orient were creating great opportunities. From a Dean Cox delivery, Jimmy Smith sent a thundering header towards straight into the path of Dean Bouzanis.

Cox himself would end up having the best chance of the second half, as MacDonald set him up with space on the right hand side of the box with just the keeper to beat, but his thunderous effort cannoned off the crossbar much to frustration of the winger.

With the game seemingly winding down to a draw Oldham almost nicked it. Jones had to be on fine form as first Robbie Simpson and then Montano were both denied as their fizzing shots were well stopped by the Orient keeper.

Four minutes of injury time went past without much incident as both teams ended with a point and much to look forward to come next season.
