O's Beat Bury

Leyton Orient
2 - 0
Bury

Brisbane Road

1st April 2013

Attendance: 3,713

Referee:

Goals from Jimmy Smith and David Mooney helped Orient on their way to victory in a challenging encounter against relegation threatened Bury.

The O`s scored both goals inside the first 35 minutes as the visitors were unable to find a response, with League 2 now seemingly their destination for the 2013/14 season.

However the game could have been different if the Shakers had taken a golden chance handed to them within the first few minutes. A mistake from Mathieu Baudry was latched onto by Bury and was passed into the centre of the box where Nicky Ajose was free with just the keeper to beat but somehow he contrived to side foot the ball wide of the target.

Kevin Blackwell`s men were made to pay for that missed opportunity with nine minutes gone as the hosts took the lead.

From a Dean Cox corner, the ball ricocheted into the path of Smith, who neatly turned and fired past a helpless Cameron Belford.

Despite the setback, the Shakers kept pushing as they squandered another guilt edge chance. From the right wing, Tom Soares`s deflected cross dropped into the path of Andy Bishop who was left unmarked in the box. With a free header he thudded his effort over the bar when it was easier to place it on target.

The O`s began to gain some control of the match after Bishop`s miss as they looked to put the game to bed. Ten minutes before half time they were able to do just that. From a cleared Orient corner, Elliott Omozusi lobbed the ball back into the penalty area where it fell to Smith who was able to get the ball through to David Mooney who tapped the ball in from two yards, despite suspicions that the Irishman was offside.

Indeed the O`s could have added a third before half time but Belford made a fantastic point blank block from Smith just minutes before half time to deny the former Chelsea man.

Bury came out fighting in the second period and generated some chances as their hopes of claiming something from Brisbane Road slowly began to peter out.

Ashley Eastham went close with a looping header with Jamie Jones beaten in the Orient goal, whilst Steven Schumacher should have done better with a volley from inside the box.

But the O`s held firm at the back and were themselves denied a goal late on by some superb last ditch defending. David Mooney ran onto a long ball and after some jinking play manage to create an opening when he curled the ball past Belford, only to be denied by a goalline clearance from David Worrall.
